INT. CLOVER FAMILY DINING ROOM - MORNING

A cozy wood-paneled dining room.  One exterior window reveals indirect morning light.

A dining table is surrounded by six chairs.  A wooden buffet lines the wall left wall, decorated with knick knacks.  A large vase of daisies sits in the middle of the buffet.

ERIKA enters, yawning and stretching.  As she passes through the room, her attention is caught by the daisies and she changes direction to walk to the buffet.

She smiles dreamily at the flowers, bending to smell them.

When she stands, her eyes are bright with tears, but she is smiling nostalgically.

She hums as she continues through the room out the opposite door.

KITCHEN NOISES can be heard.

RACHEL enters, carrying a book, and sits at the table.  She opens the book but before she begins reading, she too notices the flowers.

She puts the book down and sits staring at the flowers with a puzzled look.

Erika reenters, carrying two plates and assorted utensils and napkins.  She starts to place them around the table.

                                                                      ERIKA

                                                  (notices Rachel’s distraction)

                                 What are you thinking about?

                                                                      RACHEL

                                                  (still distracted)
                                 Hmm?

                                                                      ERIKA

(follows Rachel’s gaze to the flowers)

They’re beautiful, aren’t they? No wonder she always loved them.

Erika takes a seat at the table next to Rachel, linking their hands together.

                                                                      ERIKA (CONT’D)

                                                  (tears in her eyes)

                                 I can’t believe it’s been a year already.

Rachel leans against Erika.  They cry together.

                                                                      RACHEL

                                                    (still sniffling)

Thank you for getting the flowers.  It makes it almost seem like she’s                      still here.

                                                                                  ERIKA
                                                                 (looking shocked)

I didn’t get them.  They were here when I got up.  I thought you put them               out last night.

They look between each other and the flowers in amazement.

This is wonderful from setting the scene to the interaction between Rachel and Erika. Their feelings about their mother show the love they shared and the pain of her loss. This is sweet - They’re beautiful, aren’t they? No wonder she always loved them. - followed by the discovery that neither one placed the flowers.

I wonder how their mother died and if the type of flowers have a meaning.

Thank you so much! There's a lot I don't know about the background. I saw this scene, but didn't really have time to develop the back story...

What a sweet, poignant scene! More emotional than plotted, which I quite like. I like how you outline an everyday routine for Rachel and Erika, even though their mother's death anniversary is far from an everyday event. It illustrates how they've had to move on despite how difficult it obviously is, going by how they seek comfort from each other. Like riverotter1951, I'm interested in the daisies' significance and what happened to their mother. Maybe something to consider if you ever want to edit or expand this piece.

Thank you. There is definitely potential to write in the back story that led here, if I ever figure out what it is!

Very nice! I like that the mystery is not a scary one ;)

Thanks! I had a hard time coming up with an idea for this one for some reason...
