Reading Log: In the Bleak Midwinter
Title: In the Bleak Midwinter
Author: Julia Spencer-Fleming
# of Pages: 388
Genre: Mystery
Series: A Rev. Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyn Mystery
Rating: 4.5 / 5

It has been a looooooong time since I've picked up a new author and really like what I read, but I had seen various entries from this series popping up on people's recommendation lists, so I figured what the heck. Even so, I started this book almost trying not to like it. Tough luck for me! I loved it!

This was so well-written, both in the development of the mystery and in the characterization. Spencer-Fleming does a fantastic job of fleshing out the characters without interrupting the narrative. The characters are great. I really liked both Clare and Russ and the depths with which each is painted; they are strong, enjoyable, and humanly flawed characters. And the story was very enjoyable with lots of twists and turns to keep me guessing.

I've already downloaded the second book in the series, although that will have to wait until after I read either Cryptonomicon or The Hunger Games. And The Language Instinct is still on my night table, although I've only read about a page or two...

Yay for Clare and Russ love. txduck introduced me to the series last year. I think it took me like three weeks to read all 7 books. I've been having an itch lately to reread them.

When you get done I've got some Clare/Russ fanfic on my livejournal.
