Ficlets [SG-1]
Three short pieces written for writerverse.

Title: Gone
Prompt: need to know
Word Count: 264
Rating: G
Original/Fandom: Stargate: SG-1
Pairings (if any): none
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/RPF etc): major character death
Summary: They won't tell him anything

“That information is need-to-know, Colonel, as I’ve said before. All I can tell you is that they are as safe as anyone can be in these times.” Weariness injected a sharp edge to General Hammond’s typically patient voice as he once again parroted the boilerplate answer to O’Neill’s daily question. It had been three weeks since Daniel and Carter were spirited away in the middle of the night, and, despite his best efforts, all Jack had learned was that they were needed on a top secret project.

Jack bit back his insolent retort, knowing that blaming his CO would do nothing but damage the already tenuous morale of their camp. Two years into the Goa’uld occupation of Earth, he understood that everyone had to give all they could. And SG-1 did, the same as they always had; more than most, some would say.

“Dismissed.” Hammond’s voice broke into Jack’s thoughts.

With a nod, he left the general’s tent and wandered through the makeshift camp, unconsciously doing a headcount as the people settled in for the night. Their numbers were substantially reduced now, after their previous base of operations had been discovered and overrun only a few months ago. They had lost Teal’c in that attack, and almost lost Daniel as well.

He stood on the outskirts of the camp, looking at the night sky. The stars shone brilliantly now that the majority of the city lights had been extinguished across the planet.

“Where are you guys?” he murmured, his eyes searching the depths of space as if it still held an answer for him.

Title: Things to Come
Prompt: promise
Word Count: 446
Rating: T
Original/Fandom: Stargate: SG-1
Pairings (if any): Sam/Jack
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/RPF etc): none
Summary: “Sir, why are we holding hands?”

Sam woke slowly, the smells and sounds of the infirmary filtering through the haze of medication and pain. She saw no one when she opened her eyes. A flare of panic tore through her; it couldn’t be a good sign that none of her teammates were there waiting for her to wake.

She tried to speak, get someone’s attention, but only managed a squeaky kind of groan. Then something... no, someone started to move into her field of vision from her right side. She turned her head slightly and saw Jack’s battered face looking at her worriedly.

Her hand felt heavy as she lifted it slowly from the bed, reaching out to touch him, but holding back at the last minute, unable to see any stretch of skin not cut, bruised, or swollen. Her arm shook with the effort of holding it in midair, and she was just about to drop her hand when he gently took it in one of his. He softly kissed her palm before moving their joined hands to his cheek, cupping her hand against his skin.

This is different, she thought.

His eyes were shadowed and she flashed back briefly to the small cell, interrogations, Daniel and Teal’c shepherding them through a fog of weapons fire. She forced herself to speak.

“Daniel, Teal’c?”

“They’re okay,” he answered. He winced and amended his comment. “Well, they’re doing better than we are, at any rate. I’m sure they’ll be in here soon. As will the doc.”

Sam nodded sleepily and felt her eyes begin to droop again. Jack lowered their hands to rest on the bed, still not breaking contact. She looked down at their joined hands and then back to his face.

“Sir, why are we holding hands?”

He smirked, as much as he was able to, and motioned a little behind him. “Well, here’s the thing, Sam. I’m out.”

Her eyes tracked over to see the handles of a wheelchair. Her heart raced.

He saw her panic and cut in. “I’ll be fine, in the long-term. But this one blew both my knees. I’ve got a couple of surgeries and at least six months to a year physical therapy after that. So, I am retiring, for the last time.”

“Retiring?” she repeated, while her muddled mind tried to grab the significance of his words.

He nodded. Using the safety bar on the side of her bed, he steadied himself as he slowly stood up. He leaned down and whispered, “Retiring,” as he placed his lips upon hers. The kiss was short and chaste, given the state of their various injuries, but held within it a promise of things to come.

Title: Small Talk and Movies
Author of original beginning: tifaching
Original Beginning: #2
Word Count: 357 total (338 mine)
Rating: G
Original/Fandom: Stargate: SG-1
Pairings (if any): none
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/etc): none
Summary: Teal'c is learning about human social conventions. Set early Season 1
Notes: tifaching's line is in italics

If there’s a point to this whole conversation, Teal’c’s completely in the dark as to what it could be. He stands toward the back of the elevator car, his head tilted slightly, as he listens to the young man currently speaking with Daniel Jackson. So far he has counted at least three different topics, quickly discussed and dismissed in the short ride. Although the... Teal’c peers more closely at the rank insignia, the lieutenant is speaking with great enthusiasm, Daniel Jackson’s responses seem perfunctory and he shows no sign of retaining any of this information, and he wonders which of the two is behaving inappropriately.

The elevator comes to a stop several floors from their destination and the lieutenant gets out with a smile for Daniel and a quick head nod at Teal’c still towering in the back of the car. Daniel chuckles as the doors close behind him and looks back at Teal’c, surprised to see his teammate looking perplexed.

“What’s wrong?”

“What was the purpose of your conversation?”

Daniel shrugs. “No purpose, really. That was... well, it was just small talk.”

“Small talk?” Teal’c repeats, emphasizing each word separately.

Daniel shifts into lecture mode, which Teal’c now easily recognizes. “It’s a form of social communication: a way of breaking the ice, filling the silence. Don’t you have something similar on Chulac?”

“No,” Teal’c answers bluntly, hiding all but the barest undertone of disapproval. Among the Jaffa, such frivolous activity may sometimes be undertaken while courting, or with small children, but never among warriors.

“Of what were you small talking?”

The elevator stops again and Daniel leads the way out of the car. “Uhhh... movies. He was telling me about a movie he’s hoping to go see.” He pauses, seeing Teal’c’s bemused expression and backtracks. “See, movies are a form of recorded entertainment that are very popular...”

Daniel keeps talking as they continue to the cafeteria. Teal’c listens intently as they move through the line. As they take their seats, he is still not sure about this act of ‘small talk’ but finds that he is very interested to experience one of these ‘movies’ someday soon.

Thanks for the feedback! It's nice to hear that I got a good mix of thought vs. dialogue; I tend to veer too far one way or the other often.

I love what you did with this! Teal'c is such an amazing character and that this story reminds you of just how alien he is makes it perfect. The characterization of both Teal'c and Daniel were spot on.

Also I can see each of the team taking Teal'c to see their favorite movie.

The only critique I've got, and this is just my opinion, is that in the first paragraph you call Teal'c by name too many times. I think you could throw in a "he" there for at least one of them and not have it be confusing for the reader.

Thanks so much :) I'm glad that characterization was consistent; I haven't written a lot of Teal'c.

And, yeah, wow! I just reviewed that first paragraph... I don't know what I was doing there. I think some revisions might be in order ;)

Thanks! I've always had a little trouble writing Teal'c, but this was pretty fun :)
